Early morning drive to Nubra Valley, of all the valleys in Ladakh, Nubra is the most luxuriant and fertile lays North of Leh with the mighty Karakoram Range forming its northern boundary and the Ladakh range on its south. The valley is lush green as far as the eye can see with glaciated peaks all round it. The route from Leh takes the travel far over the Khardongla pass (5,600 m) the highest motorable road in the world. The view from the top is amazing. One can see all the way south over the Indus valley to the seemingly endless peaks and ridges of the Zanskar range.

Diskit is the main village of Nubra division with Diskit monastery on a sheer rock cliff, built in 16th century. 7 km from Diskit is Hunder village where the shaggy double humped Bactrian camel is found. Camel riding in the sand dune between Diskit and Hunder village could be really fun and more interesting in this region. Overnight at Hunder village, Nubra Valley.

    DAY 04: Nubra valley – Pangong tso – (BY SURFACE –   120 KM / APPROX 5 HRS)

After breakfast at hotel, we drive to next destination Pangong lake via Shyok and onto Tang Tse and Spangmik ( Pangong). It’s a short cut and it's a beautiful route. The road follows the Shyok river, and climbs up a mountain before finally descending into Shayok village. This village is rather a big village surrounded by barren mountains, the entire setting being very picturesque. Afternoon we reach at Pangong lake. The lake view is dramatic, surrounded by colorful mountains and its reflection makes the lake beautiful. The color of the lake changes into different color throughout the day. The division of the lake between India and China makes it different than the other Lake. Therefore, you are not allowed to go beyond a certain point. Overnight at Pangong.

Hanle also houses an Indian Astronomical Observatory which is the world’s highest observatory in the world at a staggering height of 4500 Mtrs. The Hanle Observatory is operated by the Indian Institute of Astrophysics, Bengaluru, and is currently the second-highest optical observatory in the world, with an installed telescope of about 2.01 meters (6.5 feet) in diameter.

Tso Kar also called “White Lake” because of the salt deposits around it. It is a small lake with a backdrop formed by a chain of snow-peaked mountains. The waters are deep blue in colour and the mountains, like the rest of the Ladakhi landscape are of varying shades of brown and purple with snow-capped peaks. The banks are covered with salt deposits. The water of the lake is so salty that the salt that is deposited on its banks is sold all over Ladakh and Kashmir. A Nomad Headquarters (Samad Rockchen) is located next to the lake.

So, at last we did it in 2019, and Suhit himself actually lead the group so it was amazing, his knowledge of wildlife and the Birds made the trip extra special, as we got a lot of nice shots. Thanks a lot, and best of luck. Carry on doing what you are doing.
